Herdwick Barn Reviews from other sites
Over the years since opening the barns, we have met so many lovely people & made some great friends from all over the country & welcomed some oversea visitors. These are just a few of the lovely comments we have received. Wonderful to know that all the hard work we have done over the years, to create a beautiful place for people to enjoy, & share our life on the farm & the stunning Peak District, that we are so lucky to be able to call home.

Herdwick Barn is a fantastic barn conversion which is now an immaculately presented and kitted out cottage, situated within a beautiful, peaceful and welcoming sheep farm. The family that own the barn made us feel at home from the moment we arrived until the time came for us to leave. If they didn’t already have a booking,we’d have stayed for a third week! We have only been home one day and we are already missing the barn, the family that own it and the sheep that we were introduced to whilst there. We will be sure to book this cottage again and possibly book Highfields Barn too for our parents to join us. Thank you for this little gem.

We would highly recommend this property. We have stayed at some good and some very good cottages but this fantastic barn conversion is exceptional. Nev and Kate (the owners) are very friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble, they are more than happy to go the extra mile to ensure the visitors are satisfied. The cottage is well equipped and spotless. The views from the windows over the Peak District are breath taking. The only disappointment was that we were not allowed to take ‘Meg’ the collie dog home with us.

The cottage/barn conversion was superb. It was clean, well furbished and had all sorts of ‘extras’ like games, area maps, tourist information etc. The WIFI and TV worked well, the welcome pack and other information was comprehensive and many of the little personal touches by the owners were really appreciated. The owners live right next door so, on the one occasion we had a problem with the oven, they came in and immediately showed us what to do. Parking was great (right outside the front door) and the location (at the southern end of the Peak District) was superb. In short, we would stay at Herdwick Barn again in a heartbeat and very much look forward to going back. The only thing to be wary about – and this was made very clear in the literature before we went – is that the cottage is in a remote location along a long-unmade track used by farm vehicles etc. Anyone with a low-slung car will need to drive very carefully to get the mile or so to and from the road. However, even in the week we were there (in October) we noticed that people had been out patching the track in areas it had become worn – and even though we only have a small car, there was never a problem as long as we drove slowly.

Had a fabulous relaxing week over the Christmas holidays in Herdwick Barn. The barn is tastefully decorated and immaculately clean with a wonderful log stove in the living room which is perfect on those cold winter evenings. The owners are very friendly and really helpful. Fabulous walks nearby with wonderful scenery and we look forward to coming back again soon!

The cottage and hosts were great and it was a brilliant house to take a two-year-old to. Kate and Nev provide everything you need for a child friendly stay (travel cot and bedding, high chair, stair gates, plastic plates and cutlery and even some toys). It really is in the middle of nowhere so is a great place to escape it all!

just returned home after a fabulous week exploring the beautiful Peak District. Herdwick Barn was just perfect, a fantastic place to relax and chill. A huge thank you to Kate and Nev and their lovely family who made us feel so welcome, spending time out of their busy days to chat to us about the farm and the surrounding area, and allowing us to help feed the lambs. The Barn was beautiful with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, it was spotlessly clean and every little detail had been thought through from the very welcome bottle of wine to the fresh flowers on the table in the kitchen. I certainly would have no hesitation in recommending Herdwick Barn to all our friends and family, and hope one day to return to this beautiful part of the world.

The accommodation was first class. The barn was exceptionally clean and well looked after. Our hosts were really lovely and when we experienced car problems nothing was too much trouble for them to assist us and ensure the rest of our holiday went smoothly. Kate even went food shopping for us when we were without a car for a day. The facilities were brilliant too. We are keen walkers and there was an extensive selection of maps, walks and local information supplied. There was also some fascinating info on the farm and barn we were staying at. I would rate this holiday destination as very high ranking. If you want to be in the Peak District then book this one. Value for money, clean and exceedingly welcoming. Can’t praise it enough…

An absolutely wonderful week long break in the Peak District with my family. The barn is a wonderfully done conversion, completed last year. It is well presented and clean. The amenities are all you could ask for. Kitchen equipped well, both bedrooms large and comfortable. The master bedroom and bed are huge! You may lose your partner, if so, Meg the Farm collie could probably be enticed to go and look for them somewhere on the far side of the bed. Bathroom contains a sink, toilet and bath/shower. shower has a cubicle at one end of the bath. The living room has TV, Digi box and the WIFI allows the use of the Smart TV functionality. There is also a DVD player. The real fire however provided all the wind down entertainment we needed, that and a good single malt. The WIFI took the pounding from 2 x tech savvy adults and a teenager so it’s been thoroughly load tested and works. On the subject of the fire the property has electric radiators upstairs as well as a back boiler for the master bedroom off the fire. There is also underfloor heating if it’s getting chilly that can be turned on by request. It was summer for us so we made do with the fire more out of cosmetic need than actually being cold. The rear of the property looks out over the fields to the rear. Ask about the Herdwick Sheep you will see bimbling around by the living room window. The front of the property has parking for the barn, a picnic table for eating outside and a space for a barbeque to be lit (disposable BBQ provided as part of the welcome pack). The welcome pack is great, enough to get that first brew done after a journey of any length. Choccie biscuits were provided! The Track is a farm track for the last part of the Journey and the recommendations from the owners are that a 4 x 4 should be considered in the winter months. My Skoda Superb handled it fine, it certainly gave the suspension a work out. The position of the site is great, down in the SW corner of the Peak District (ish) and within easy striking distance of multiple sightseeing areas, walks, Alton Towers and other such things. Be active or relax and kick back, either one is possible here. The owners and their family are lovely. Friendly and always able to answer a query or just have a chat. Meg the collie is also a character to be introduced too. In conclusion the 3 of us loved it, we have already re-booked to try to coincide with lambing season next year. Would I recommend it? Yes.

The accommodation was fantastic. A beautiful barn restoration, warm, cosy and extremely relaxing. A very warm welcome with the wood burner already lit for us. Everything you could possibly need is there it has been very well thought out and the bedroom and main bed is huge but still very warm and relaxing. The detail in the restoration is outstanding and the little touches just finish it perfectly. You have peace, quiet and sheep and Meg the collie is lovely, as are her owners Nev and Kate. A wonderfully relaxing holiday would highly recommend.

Herwick Barn exceeded all our expectations as a holiday stay. Everything has been so clearly laid out, plenty of instructions so you don’t spend ages trying to figure things out. It is clear the owners really have put a lot of time and effort into making this place perfect, and it is. There are blankets to snuggle up in front of the fire. Clear recycling boxes. All you need in the kitchen. There is an abundance of leaflets of places to go, walks and maps, games and books. Not to mention the barn is finished to a very high standard. If you want to stay in and relax in front of the fire and watch a movie or go out walking and come back to a hot shower/bath and cosy night in this is a great place. We were welcomed by the hosts, there was milk in the fridge and some wine and fresh flowers. Really welcoming so we could relax straight away. It’s a peaceful place yet not too far from good walking such as Dovedale, The Roaches and Tissington all within half an hour reach. There is also local walking. We enjoyed waking up to see the Herdwicks in the fields and hear the occasional donkey! We didn’t have any problems with the track in a Peugeot 207 which is a normal car, as long as you take it slowly. There is also good Wi-Fi. We recommend trying the lamb as well, truly delicious.

Herdwick Barn is a beautiful place to stay, it had everything that we needed and more. It is well situated for all the places that we wanted to visit with our grandchildren. Our granddaughter was so pleased to be able to feed the lamb when we were around at feed time.

We had a wonderful time at Herdwick barn. The welcome pack, including a thoughtful addition for our two-year-old daughter was a brilliant touch, along with the kind set up of toys and books. thank you. The cottage was comfortable and cosy, having a log fire was a great treat especially as the weather didn’t treat us so well! We had a wonderful time exploring both the peak district and Staffordshire and would definitely recommend this cottage to others.

Herdwick Barn is a beautiful place to stay. It was the perfect place to go on our first holiday as a couple. The barn is clean, spacious and cosy. The owners, Kate and Nev, have thought of everything to make this cottage home from home. We were met with a roaring log fire and a Christmas tree which lit up in the lounge. The barn has a lovely atmosphere. It is quiet, peaceful and warm. The owners are there if you need them, but they let you have your own space and time. We were provided with plenty of wood and coal to light the fire, but more was available if you needed it. The farm’s border collie, Meg, loves to play fetch in the mornings. We loved to watch the sun rise over the hills and watch Meg running round in the yard. The dirt track road to the barn is fine if you take it steady. There’s a lovely pub nearby, The Reform. Best pie ever. We are looking to return to Herdwick Barn next year. Thanks Kate and Nev. You gave us the best holiday we could have imagined.

A wonderful barn conversion, in a fantastic setting, thoroughly enjoyed our stay. My Wife and I have recently returned from a week away staying at Herdwick Barn. The barn conversion has been done to a great standard by owners Nev and Kate. Lots of nice thoughtful touches throughout the property which is very well equipped. The living room is spacious but also cosy, especially on an evening bunkered in with the fire going. The entrance hall/porch is brilliant area for all your outdoor gear, boots, coats etc. The master bedroom is a very good size with a big comfortable bed. The location is brilliant with great views, as a working sheep farm the sheep are never far from view. We loved waking up to see the little Herdies feeding (all they seem to do is eat!) We spent most of our week walking/hiking, again the property is perfectly located with numerous bridleways and footpaths on the doorstep. We didn’t touch our car for the first few days, doing circular walks from the property and then dining in using the well-equipped kitchen /dining room (be sure to try some of Kate & Nevs lamb produce, we even left with a bag full to take home very tasty!) Plenty more to see and do only a short drive away, we enjoyed walking and bird watching at the 2 reservoirs close by. The pub in Thorncliffe is great, good food and cracking log burning fire. Next time we come to stay in this area of the Peaks Herdwick barn will be our first choice. We were very impressed with our first visit, it exceeded our expectations.

Amazing week at Herdwick Barn! Definitely one of the best cottages we have stayed in (and we’ve stayed in quite a lot). The cottage lacks for nothing, every conceivable thing to make your stay an enjoyable one. The owners Kate and Nev have done a fantastic job in furnishing this cottage to a high standard. The lounge was super cosy and we used the log burner nearly every night. The kitchen again had every possible item, utensil and appliance we needed. Our bedroom had a comfy, king size bed which gave us some of the best sleeps we have ever had. Kate and Nev are a mine of information on the history of the property and adjoining land and it was great to wake up and look out over their Herdwick sheep first thing in the morning. There are plenty of leaflets, books and maps on site and also games and DVDs for when the weather is lousy. The weather was okay, if a little cold but we visited Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock Bath and went for a canal walk at Whaley Bridge and also Froghall Wharf. We also visited Carsington Water but only managed to walk around half of it! Tittesworth Reservoir on a sunny day is also nice to visit. We loved Herdwick Barn and will definitely go back, maybe a late summer or early autumn visit next time. Many thanks to Kate and Nev for the welcome pack. We will miss Meg giving us a lot of attention with her toy!
